- The Process: The retrieved, mature eggs are placed into a specialized culture dish filled with a nutrient-rich fluid (culture medium) that acts like the fluid in the fallopian tubes. Thousands of highly motile, “washed” sperm are added to this dish.
- The Fertilization: Over the next 16 to 18 hours, the sperm naturally swim toward the egg, surround it, and compete to penetrate its outer shell. Ultimately, one sperm naturally breaks through and fertilizes the egg.
- Who it is for: Conventional IVF is highly effective for couples whose primary cause of infertility is female-factor (such as blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, or ovulation disorders), provided the male partner’s sperm count and motility are healthy and robust.
2. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

The Embryo Development Timeline: Day 1 to Day 5

Day 0: The Retrieval and Insemination
This is the day of your egg retrieval surgery and sperm collection. By the afternoon, the eggs are either inseminated (Conventional IVF) or injected (ICSI) and placed into the incubator to rest.
Day 1: The Fertilization Check (The Zygote Stage)
Approximately 16 to 18 hours after insemination, our embryologists carefully examine the dishes under a microscope to confirm if fertilization was successful.
- They look for the presence of two pronuclei (2PN) inside the egg—one containing the mother’s genetic material and one containing the father’s.
- If these two pronuclei are visible, normal fertilization has occurred, and the single cell is now officially called a zygote. You will receive a phone call from our team with your “Fertilization Report,” detailing how many eggs successfully fertilized.
Day 2 to Day 3: The Cleavage Stage
Over the next 48 hours, the single-cell zygote begins to divide rapidly. This is called the cleavage stage.
- By Day 2, a healthy embryo will have divided into 2 to 4 cells.
- By Day 3, it should ideally have divided into 6 to 8 cells.
- Our embryologists monitor the symmetry of the cells and check for “fragmentation” (cellular debris that can indicate lower embryo quality).
Day 4: The Morula Stage
The embryo continues to divide rapidly, becoming a tightly packed ball of 16 to 32 cells. At this point, it is called a morula (Latin for “mulberry,” which it closely resembles). The cells begin to compact and communicate with one another, preparing for the final stage of laboratory development.
Day 5 to Day 6: The Blastocyst Stage
This is a critical milestone in IVF. By Day 5, the embryo should contain over 100 cells and transform into a blastocyst. A blastocyst is highly differentiated, possessing two distinct parts:
